Bruckhausen

15-piece photo, art, and artist's book

Bruckhausen is a northern district of Duisburg characterized by significant population decline and a high vacancy rate. More than two-thirds of the remaining population has an immigrant background. The steel mill and coking plant cause enormous dust pollution. Parts of the neighborhood have since been demolished to create a “green belt” separating the industrial area from the residential buildings. A friend of mine, Thomas Hallmann, lived on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße, in one of the houses photographed. Several people were found dead in that house during this period. The presence of the past and the absence of a future are conceptual elements of this photographic work, which was created using my last rolls of AQUA-Optima film. Production of this film stock was discontinued in 2014. The photographs were produced as a limited edition of five hand-printed copies each in a color lab (C-print RA4). This work was created between 2006 and 2008; the book was published in 2009.
